All-Stars at Work: A Home-Run for Inclusion
By Sarina Mam
This year marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the vital contributions of workers with disabilities and the importance of inclusive employment practices. Established in 1945, NDEAM reminds us that every person deserves the opportunity to bring their unique skills and perspectives to the workforce.

At SpArc Philadelphia, employment inclusion is at the heart of what we do all year long. Through personalized coaching, skills training, and ongoing support, the Employment Services team at SpArc Philadelphia helps participants prepare for, obtain, and thrive in meaningful jobs throughout the community.
Each day, we are committed to supporting individuals with disabilities throughout their journey in the workforce, meeting individuals where they are to help them achieve their goals and live an independent, fulfilling life.
To celebrate NDEAM this month, we spotlight the individuals who are central to our mission of supporting people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD), Ernie and Nick, who have worked with Citizens Bank Park throughout numerous seasons of the Philadelphia Phillies.

During the Phillies' season, which typically begins in March and ends in October, many participants at SpArc Services work with Citizens Bank Park in the environmental services department. From maintaining clean stands to ensuring fans have a great experience, their hard work helps keep one of the city’s most beloved spaces running smoothly.
Ernie has been part of the environmental services team for more than five years, bringing enthusiasm and reliability to every shift. He’s known for his positive attitude, friendly humor, and love of being part of the Phillies family.
Initially, Ernie struggled to adjust to the new job, often calling out of work on days he was scheduled. Now, Ernie has learned the importance of reliability and responsibility. “I come to work every day. The only time I call out is when I’m sick, and I’ve learned you have to call out before your shift starts at 6 AM.”

When asked about what keeps him coming back season after season, Ernie says it’s the camaraderie, the excitement of game days, and the feeling of independence a paycheck brings. “I want to keep working here forever and ever,” Ernie said.
For Nick, who has been employed at Citizens Bank Park for thirteen years, his work at the stadium was his first experience not only at the stadium, but also his first ever job experience.
“I love it, I love working there, and it feels pretty good to help out,” Nick shared. Beyond a paycheck, employment is about teamwork, community, and being part of something bigger. That sense of belonging and accomplishment is what drives our mission forward.

While Red October has ended, Nick is already thrilled for what is in store for him next. “I’ve been saving my money to go on vacation to visit my cousin in Puerto Rico,” Nick said, “They just moved there and I think it will be a really good time.”
As the Phillies wrap up another season, we’re proud to celebrate the all-stars at SpArc, who step up to the plate and show us that inclusion is always a winning play. Their commitment reminds us that inclusion isn’t just a goal, it’s a daily practice that creates stronger communities, one opportunity at a time.
